Did you just finish your first boating season? You're not alone in missing the warmer weather and hitting the Charleston waterways whether you headed offshore or up the creek. But what comes after it's time to put the boat up for the chill that's rolling in?

Maintenance

The off-season is a great time to do basic projects that tend to get put off in the summertime. Maybe it's routine maintenance like replacing a filter and changing the oil, or a larger problem that popped up between the weekend cruising. Did your ladder break or a strap that holds your wakeboard in place? Whatever it is, boating problems always occur at the most inopportune times. Eliminate those big maintenance issues by taking advantage of the off-season to fix things that will enhance your boating season next year!

Winterization

Even though Charleston doesn't get as cold as it does in other northern regions of the country, it's important to know your winterization needs. Before you put your boat up for the winter, make sure you read over the different manufacturer recommendations. Generally, most manufacturers suggest ensuring there's no water trapped in your tanks, engine and heads that could cause corrosion or freeze with dropping temperatures. They'll ask you to drain various lines, add the necessary stabilizers, properly cover your boat to keep moisture out and protect it from the elements. Properly preparing for storing your boat will make the start to next year's boating season a lot easier!

Upgrades

Upgrades can always improve your boating experience and off-season is the perfect time to get the new products you've been eyeing throughout the year. Having finished your first season out on the water, you are more aware of what you actually use frequently on your boat. Maybe you thought you would be water-skiing more often than you thought and purchased great tow ropes, but really you found out you have an interest in fishing. This is the time to upgrade your fishfinder at the helm in order to track down the schools of fish under the hull. Most of the time, manufacturers introduce a lot of new accessories in the fall so finding the hottest gadget you want is in reach.

Planning Ahead

You might have missed some fun spots this past year so while you have your charts out, take some extra time to look at some new locations that you should fish or cruise to next boating season. Pick a good camping spot, a local spot to dock and dine at or an adrenaline seeking watersport you've been wanting to get into. Planning your summer activities now can help save time and prep for next year because before you know it, your second boating season will arrive and you want it to be one you remember!
