The engine serial number (ESN) is a unique identifier of your product and the key to efficient servicing and correct ordering of parts. It can be found on decals and product plates. For the exact appearance and location on your engine, please see the operators manual. The guide we have provided shows you where to find your boat engine serial number for Yamaha Outboards, Mercury Outboards, Volvo Penta SternDrive and MerCruiser SternDrive.

Once you locate this information, it is important for you to take a picture or write the number down for reference when it comes time for your annual service.

Depending on the model, you may need to tilt the engine up and/or turn the steering wheel to get a good view.

For Yamaha Outboard, your serial number is going to be stamped on a metal plate on the clamp bracket assembly on the port (left) middle section of the engine. Below is a photo for reference:

For Mercury Outboard, your serial number will be located on a rectangular tag on the starboard (right) side of your motor on the transom mount. In engines 8HP and higher, the ESN is on starboard (right) side - halfway down the transom assembly, just below the engine's powerhead. For engines 6HP and lower, the ESN tag will be located on the top of the swivel bracket.

For Volvo Penta Sterndrives and MerCrusier Sterndrives, the ESN for the sterndrive is in sticker form located on top of the plastic cover that covers the engine.
